The rest of this week in NBE3C:
Today we will be reading an essay by Chief Dan George called "I'm a Native in North America" and we will be discussing it and answering some questions. I'm away tomorrow, but you will be reading a short story called "The Animal People Choose a Leader" and you will be answering some questions on it. On Friday we will be watching the next 8th Fire Episode and working through an analysis of it. Today we will be working on the Identity assignment that is inspired by the Thomas King poem.
You will be asked to select 1 object that represents something about your identity - a football, a cell phone, a horse etc. Then you will be asked to identify 7-10 things from your identity that someone might not know about you just from knowing you briefly in the INSIDE of the object. On the outside of the object you will include 7-10 things that someone might know about you just by looking at your or knowing you briefly - eye colour, hair colour, fave foods etc. Make sure you do this in good copy and make it look perrrrrdddddy! Happy Monday!
Today we are going to talk more about identities through reading Richard Wagamese's "Learning to be Human" and Thomas King's "I'm Not the Indian you had in Mind." You will write a summary of the poem and hand it in today. Tomorrow on Tuesday you will be working on an Identity assignment based off what you learned from the Thomas King poem. You will apply it to yourself and your own identity. Today we will watch episode 1 of "8th Fire" and work through the questions associated with it.
Today we will be talking about Myths and Legends in Indigenous culture and we will read through 3 different myths.
We will also talk about some important definitions for understanding content moving forward. Today we will be reading one of my all time favourite essays - "Pretty Like a White Boy" by Drew Hayden Taylor. We will discuss it and work through some questions. Finish them up for homework and we will discuss further tomorrow.
Today we will be reading two more articles about stereotypes in the media with Indigenous people - "If Natives can play Werewolves..." and Native stereotypes in sports.
Today we will be digging deeper into Indigenous issues by reading a newspaper article called "Depressing return for anti-native stereotypes" which discusses Attawapiskat briefly. You will work through some questions and we will watch a few videos that relate.
If time remains we will read another article by Drew Hayden Taylor called "If natives can play Twilight werewolves, why not spacemen, too?" that discusses some issues with casting in Hollywood movies. |
